Since wind turbines operate in natural environments, they inevitably suffer from the impact of natural disasters, and lightning strikes are among the most prominent issues.
The characteristics of wind turbines themselves—including their installation location, height, integration of numerous sensitive electronic and electrical components, high cost, and maintenance requirements—determine their strong demand for lightning protection systems.

In accordance to IEC 62305 and IEC 61400-24, below should be considered when categorizing surge protection zones and selecting/installing the SPD:

1. Lightning protection zone (LPZ 0…3);

2. Relative SPD test waveshapes (8/20 μs or 10/350μs);

3. Voltage protection level

4. Voltage and standard of power supply (230/400 V; 400/690 V; TT/TN system);

5. Harmonic wave interference
